Shoes are a form of footwear distinguished from boots as not extending over the ankle bone (although this is not a hard and fast rule; high-top sneakers are a notable example).

While bootblacking in the Leather Community is largely focused on the care of boots, most of the techiques involved in boot care are applicable to shoes. However, the leather used in shoe making is often softer and thinner than that used for boots, so some techniques are more appropriate for shoes.
